MY CREATIONS
Detritus
Kevin’s creative practice has been driven by his concerns regarding the environment
and the need for the earth’s resources to be utilized in a sustainable manner. He
intends to continue to create art that is ecologically friendly. Kevin recognizes the
need for artists to become more aware of the role they can play in this process by
using re purposed or up cycled materials as a means of aesthetic expression. His
current body of work Detritus brings together debris and waste found in a local scrap
yard. This includes steel rust, cast iron rust, aluminum corrosion, brass corrosion, red fire bricks, slate, old red bricks and lime. These materials were then scraped crushed and ground with a mortise and pestle into fine particles. These particles were then blended with a natural water-based glue as a binder and turned into homemade paints.
My canvas a car bonnet, my subject ecology and the environment, my aim is to
paint and create from the waste and corrosion a scene of recycling from those very
materials that are being recycled.
This combined with aluminum assemblages made from melted car engines and alloy wheels from a fire at the scrap yard. These depict the “UK and the Americas”. The oceans in-between the countries are filled with plastic waste, collected on a North Cornwall beach.
I want to give the viewer a visual representation of our part of the planet. So, they think about their own waste in this part of the World and the plastic we all use. And ultimately to force Governments by public pressure to intensify recycling Worldwide in a bid to make our World an Eco-friendlier, more sustainable planet for us all.
